LONG BIO
"Don't be late for joy." --- Surrenda
Welcome to the alternative reality that is the Dragonsail Puppets! We hope you enjoy their spirited, noisy garage funk music and comedy.
On Earth One, all of the music and lyrics are written by Dragonsail, aka Greg Hester. Likewise, all of the playing and vocal performances and recording and mixing are done by Dragonsail as well. But that's not as interesting as what's happening on Earth Two.
On Earth Two, these songs are created and performed by a scheming diva named Surrenda and her enthusiastic but clueless dog sidekick Bruce. Additional songwriting is provided by their septuagenarian feline keyboardist, Catatonia, and Onree - the sweet pup with the mean shaker. There's also some old geezers in the band who've been with Surrenda for a couple of decades who actually play real instruments, but they mostly loom in the shadows.
The range of styles in their music includes funk, psychedelia, hard rock, prog rock and disco, which they tear away at with whatever instruments and found objects they have stowed away with them aboard their ship, the Club Dragonsail.
Now, a word about the actual show. The humor of the Dragonsail Puppets teeters just on the edge of the dark or the blue, but manages to not fall into the offensive, at least by general audience standards. The humor flirts with the highbrow but maintains a broad accessibility and always maintains a strong heart at its core.
NEWEST PROJECT:
The puppets are continuously uploading musical comedy videos to their YouTube channel. Their albums are available on all major music platforms including iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, and Soundcloud.
BACKSTORY:
One day, Mr. Dragonsail decided he wanted to create a musical comedy puppet show for YouTube, and so he held auditions. First through the gate was Catatonia, a retired art professor who mistakenly thought it was an audition for a highbrow PBS series. She brought with her a young neighbor dog - her protege, Onree - as she believed he had great potential to be an arts commentator. Onree brought along his best friend and dog neighbor, Bruce, an underwhelming choice where Catatonia was concerned.
Onree, Bruce and Catatonia were a shoo-in to play the parts of the sweet but confused pups and the highbrow but hilarious (and often inebriated) old cat. Now the show needed a conniving, ambitious diva to drive the storyline. The first attempt at casting Surrenda resulted in a choice of a tragic disaster in fraying blue felt with a sad yellow mop of hair. After two onscreen attempts, it became clear that her performance could be seen as nothing more than a cautionary tale about the dangers of meth addiction. With the second audition, a force of nature arrived with her haphazard but dramatic wig and wardrobe choices, and it was clear that she was the right fit for the aggressive, soulful, self-involved but utterly engaging character of SURRENDA.
Season 1 of their YouTube series chronicles how they became a group of musical performers and ultimately found their way to sailing the seas, singing their songs and honing their comedic craft aboard the "Club Dragonsail". Upon this war-scarred ship, they entertain their "willing captives"—aka patrons who have dared to buy a ticket and take the ride—and dock every so often to regale fans in various ports.
We hope you'll feel free to enter their comedic and musical world and stay for the long haul!
And as Onree says in his misguided attempt at French: Merci buttercups!
